Councillor - Erin Van Moorsel
I am incredibly humbled and grateful to be serving as a Councillor on the OECTA Provincial Executive. My involvement with the Association includes serving on my local bargaining and political action committees, as well as providing resources and support for members in the role of Human Rights Councillor (VP of Equity). Provincially, I have had the privilege of chairing the Diversity Advisory Board and the Human Rights Committee, and serving on the Financial Sustainability Committee. I have shared my voice and perspectives at various events, including: OECTA’s Council of Presidents and Annual General Meetings; in OECTA’s VP of Equity trainings and Learning from Diverse Voices video series; at conventions for the Canadian Labour Congress and Ontario Federation of Labour; and in the media, including the CBC’s Ontario Today. My passion for justice and equity have brought me to this point in my career, and I look forward to using this opportunity to continue advocating for necessary supports and fair working conditions for all OECTA members.
My teaching career began as a Core French teacher for the London Catholic District School Board, upon graduating Western University with a BEd I/S specializing in Physical Education and French. I am bilingual, thanks to both my parents (for recognizing my need to be challenged) and to a strong French Immersion program at St. Anthony’s Elementary School and Sacred Heart High School in Bruce-Grey, where I grew up. After two years in London, I returned home to the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Borad, where I have enjoyed teaching Core French, Core English, and primary to intermediate grades. I have always loved school and learning new things; teaching, for me, is just another form of learning.
When I am not working, I am playing. I love fitness and health, and I train and compete both in Olympic weightlifting and roller derby. My family also ensures there is no down time; as my eldest just began first year university, my youngest is training towards a spot on the Canadian Junior Olympic Lifting Team, and my wife plays for the Canadian roller derby team. My idea of relaxing is definitely more active than most, however, I love to knit, DIY, read, hike, and spend time at the beach, both in the water, or watching the waves roll in.
